Mr. Robinson: You’ll Cream Your Fuckin’ Pants

Darryl Philbin gave good camera, at the office

a6The last time I re-watched The Office, I found myself in awe of how Darryl Philbin handled Kelly Kapoor’s crazy. “I want a man who is that patient with my crazy.” I would mutter to myself, as he confused her with his niceness and understanding, while steadfastly calling her on her shit.

I’ve enjoyed Craig’s movies. Peeples, Hot Tub Time Machine’s 1&2, and This is The End were genius. Everytime I see him deliver material, I can’t help but notice that niceness is the cornerstone of his comedy.

p10773775_b_h9_acSo, I started Mr. Robinson expecting a sweet kinda trite half hour rom-com. The credits are styled like What’s Happening!! and WKRP. The scene change music calls up The Cosby show; without the guilt and rapeyness. In the first minute of the show, you’re smiling nostalgically, without knowing why.

Craig is a man who can’t decide between his struggling band, and his surprising love for teaching. The writing manages to be dirty and family friendly at the same time. It pulled some awesome laughs out of my belly.

a2a4The side characters are wacky teachers. My favorite is the math teacher who strips on the side for cash. But the gym teacher who offers “Ballface” (dodgeball straight to your face) as an alternative to detention will win you over eventually too.

The funniest, by far, is Roz from Frazier, playing the overworked Vice-Principal. She vacillates between lusting after Craig and lecturing him on his priorities. Give her one drink and she often turns back into the sex-crazed groupie she used to be. The kids pull on your heart strings, as well as Craig’s. And they usually sing a song in every episode. It’s hard not to be charmed by them and Craig’s house band: Nasty Delicious.

Nasty Delicious

“I hope your ears are over 18” Craig warns his Nasty Delicious audience at the end of the 1st ep. “Because they’re about to get sound banged.” In that moment, I was completely, and totally into it.
